Before the completion of the Haight Street Cable Railroad in 1883, what is now the Haight-Ashbury was a collection of isolated farms and acres of sand dunes. The Spanish placed indigenous peoples including the Ohlone into forced labour systems and diseases killed a major part of indigenous populations, leading to the fragmentation of indigenous cultures and ways of life. The Ohlone were hunter-gatherers and lived in their communities for thousands of years before the Spanish colonised the region. The name "Upper Haight" is also used by locals in contrast to the Haight-Fillmore, or Lower Haight.
